ABOUT ROBIN HURLEY

Inspired by a love of music, Hurley started Nine Mile Ltd. in 1984, a company specializing in the distribution of independent labels and releases.  Based in the midlands of England, Nine Mile was a member of The Cartel and distributed iconic bands such as New Order, Depeche Mode, and The Smiths. Hurley also co-founded Chapter 22 Records, which produced UK hits from indie faves Pop Will Eat Itself and The Mission.  

In 1987 Hurley moved to the US to run Rough Trade’s US operations – splitting his time between the company’s two US offices in San Francisco and New York. During this period, Hurley worked with many groundbreaking artists, including the Pixies, The Breeders, Galaxie 500, Mazzy Star, Camper Van Beethoven, and Lucinda Williams, whom he discovered and signed off a demo tape.

Hurley became head of 4AD Inc. in 1991, based in Los Angeles to oversee 4AD’s US label deal with Warner Bros. In the mid-1990's, he was promoted to worldwide Managing Director of 4AD. The ‘90’s was 4AD’s most successful decade with acclaimed releases from Belly, Dead Can Dance, Pixes, The Breeders, Cocteau Twins, Lush and This Mortal Coil. 

When the co-founder of 4AD, Ivo Watts-Russell, retired at the end of 1999, Hurley left 4AD for Rhino Entertainment, the catalogue division of Warner Music Group. He became Senior VP of A&R in 2004, leading all aspects of the label's A&R team, including managing the relations and supervising the releases by several superstar acts including: Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant, Mick Jagger, Joni Mitchell, Bee Gees, The Doors, Genesis, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Tom Waits, Jackson Browne, New Order, The Smiths, The Cure, Talking Heads, and Depeche Mode.

He founded Sea Level in 2010, and is based in Los Angeles.
